Key Ideas
- Identification is the process of determining what something is by carefully observing its features. Scientists identify living things by comparing observable characteristics to known descriptions.
- All living things fall into major categories: plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms. Animals are further divided into vertebrates and invertebrates. Vertebrates include fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
- A dichotomous key is a tool that guides identification through a series of yes/no questions based on observable features. Field guides use descriptions, images, and range maps to narrow down possibilities.
- Digital tools like Seek by iNaturalist and Merlin Bird ID extend the power of field guides into a smartphone. Seek uses a camera to identify plants and animals in real time. Merlin can identify birds from photos, descriptions, or live sound.
- There is variation within every species. Two members of the same species may look different in size, color, or pattern. Variation does not make them different species.
- Identification: The process of determining what a living thing is by carefully observing and comparing its features to known descriptions.

Supply List
- 5 to 8 printed photos or drawings of insects, leaves, birds, or other organisms (unlabeled)
- A simple dichotomous key for the chosen category (available in many field guides or printable online)
- Pencil and a recording sheet
- Optional: a device with the Seek or Merlin app installed for verification
Instructions
- Place the mystery organism photos face-down in a folder or envelope. Students reveal one at a time.
- For each organism, students work through the dichotomous key step by step, recording which path they followed and what features led each decision.
- After completing the key, students write their identification and the two or three features that were most helpful.
- Reveal the answers. For any misidentifications, trace back through the key together and find where the path diverged.
- Extension: Go outside and find a real organism. Use Seek or a field guide to identify it. Compare what features the app used to what features the dichotomous key would ask about.
